How it works
The first step in this type of adoption process is to locate the biological parent and ask them to terminate their parental rights. If this parent cannot be found, then an ad must be placed in the paper, giving the parent time to come forward and grant or refuse the request. If the termination is contested, then the matter must go to court before the potential parent can schedule their adoption hearing.
The official termination of parental rights ends the legal parent-child relationship. Once that relationship has been severed, the child is legally free to be adopted by a stepparent. The court takes many matters into consideration when an adoption plea is placed, and the Probate Court Services Department conducts interviews with the potential adopter, the current parents, and the child or children.
